Brazilian Histories accompanies a major exhibition held at the Museu de Arte de São Paulo Assis Chateaubriand (MASP) in the year that marks the 200th anniversary of Brazil’s independence and the 100th anniversary of the famous Week of Modern Art in São Paulo. The project is part of MASP’s series of exhibitions on different histories, and is part of the context of an intense review of the histories of Brazil. What are the themes, narratives, events, and characters to be celebrated, studied, and questioned in this long and conflicting process? With more than 300 works by some 250 artists and collectives, from the fifteenth to the twentieth- first century, this catalog reproduces paintings, drawings, sculptures, photographs, videos, installations, newspapers, magazines, books, documents, flags, and maps included in the show. The book follows the exhibition’s division in eight sections, each one introduced by a curatorial text: “Flags and Maps;” “Landscapes and the Tropics;” “Land and Territory;” “Retakings;” “Rebellions and Revolts;” “Myths and Rites;” “Festivities;” and “Portraits.” This is an indispensable volume for anyone who wants to understand Brazilian visual art and culture over the centuries in a broader, more diverse, and revisionist perspective.
