Queer Histories celebrates the richness and multiplicity of queer creativity in the visual arts. This book accompanies the eponymous large collective exhibition at Museu de Arte de São Paulo Assis Chateaubriand (MASP) which brought together more than three hundred works that address queer topics or were created by LGBTQIA+ artists, activists, and researchers from the five continents, and includes paintings, sculptures, photographs, drawings, engravings, videos, and documents. Without the aim of producing a single and totalizing reading, the multiplicity of narratives presented highlights how histories— including art history—function as critical resources for queer lives. The catalog, like the exhibition, is organized in eight sections: “Love and Desire,” “Icons and Muses,” “Sacred and Profane,” “Spaces and Territories,” “Abstractions,” “Ecosexualities and Otherworldly Fantasies,” “Biblioteca Cuir,” and “Archives.” It includes curatorial essays, reproductions of the works, and exhibition views. Aligned with MASP’s mission, which defines the museum as “diverse, inclusive, and plural,” Queer Histories has a special interest in making History in some way queer—whether by using fiction and narration to invent histories that were erased or by looking to the past to envision new futures.
O MASP Loja vende catálogos e antologias editados pelo museu, sua linha própria de produtos, bem como livros de outras editoras e uma seleção de objetos provenientes de várias partes do país, criados por comunidades de artesãos, povos indígenas e designers.
